A mother who urgently needs a bone marrow transplant has urged volunteer donors to come
forward.
Rachel Baughen, from Clerkenwell Green in the City of London, has potentially fatal
chronic myeloid leukaemia.
Her best chance of survival is a bone marrow transplant. Potential donors can register at
St James’s Church in Clerkenwell from 1200 GMT on Wednesday.
Daughter Charlotte, 18, said: “We want our mum to beat this disease but need everyone’s
help to do so.”
Mrs Baughen’s husband Andrew is the vicar at St James’s Church and they also have a 16-
year-old daughter called Harriet.
Earlier this year Mrs Baughen was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia, a cancer of
the white blood cells.
She had an intolerance to the drug treatment she was given and has so far been unable to
find a suitable bone marrow donor.
Mr Baughen said: “It’s been a strange time for us all as Rachel and I continue to keep
busy in the parish but have this terrible condition living with us each day.”
Each potential donor will be asked to give a saliva sample at the church on Wednesday, at
a clinic run by the Anthony Nolan Trust charity.
Charlotte said: “This is the one last chance for mum to find a donor, so Harriet and I are
doing everything possible to get donors along to the clinic.”
